Glue-Down Vinyl Flooring

A closer look at flexible vinyl, bonding and the preparation beneath it.

Glue-down vinyl is bonded to the prepared substrate with a specified adhesive. It can create a low-profile finish, but the substrate and adhesive are part of the flooring decision.

Read the layers from the surface down

The coating and clear wear layer protect a printed design. Flexible vinyl layers form the body, sometimes with reinforcement. Exact constructions differ. Adhesive and the subfloor are installation components, not part of the factory plank’s stated thickness.

How it differs from rigid click vinyl

Traditional glue-down LVT is flexible and bonded rather than joined as a floating click floor. Do not assume it includes a rigid SPC core, locking joint or acoustic pad. “Luxury vinyl tile” can describe wood-look planks as well as tile-look products, so confirm the installation type.

Why preparation matters

Ask your installer to assess smoothness, soundness, moisture and adhesive compatibility. An attractive plank cannot hide every ridge or depression below it. The quote should identify any preparation, moisture-control system and compatible adhesive required for the actual substrate.

A square edge makes the joint less pronounced. A bevel outlines the pieces. Wood, stone and tile prints can use different textures and edge treatments; ask to view more than one piece together.

Questions for your quote

  • What is the clear wear-layer thickness, separate from total plank thickness?
  • Which adhesive and substrate preparation are included?
  • When can the floor receive foot traffic, furniture and cleaning?
  • Are transitions, stair pieces and spare planks included?
  • What are the product’s water, temperature and radiant-heat conditions?

Loose-lay is a separate installation approach. Its adhesive requirements can vary with layout and use; do not treat every loose-lay product as glue-down or every product as adhesive-free.
